You can't miss the Visitor Information Centre at Roma - just look out for the Oil Rig and Miners's statue along the Warrego Highway as you enter town from the east. The Big Rig housed at this site is Australia’s Living History of Oil and Gas Exploration. A fee is charged to enter the Oil Patch and look at the machinery and discover the history of exploration in the area. They also have a Night Show with stories of Roma’s history and the discovery of Oil and gas.
The Roma Visitor Information centre is walking distance to the Big Rig Caravan Park and we headed up soon after arriving to gather information on things to see and do. Around the grounds are statues of early gas works, old cottages and free gas barbeques for visitors. The VIC has a range of local products and souvenirs for sale as well as a large map to see where things are in town.
One of the interesting things we did while staying in Roma was to join a tour of the local cattle sale yards. This is one of the biggest sale yards in Australia and local volunteers (retired farmers) arrive on sale day to explain the sale process and conduct the tours. Highly recommended.
