We recommend you join a motoring organisation before travelling around Australia:
These are state based organisations whose membership entitles you to roadside assistance within Australia. Please contact the relevant organisation for membership details and services provided, as these may vary between agencies.
Valuable feedback from one of our users (thanks, Eric):
I have just read your article on roadside assistance, your recommendation to join a state-based motoring organisation and that weight limits can vary between organisations. As a motorhome owner, I have looked into this and have become aware that you do not have to live in a state to join that organisation. Living in SA, I found the cover by the RAA of SA inadequate. Having made enquiries, I have now transferred membership to the RACV, which provides cover nationally for vehicles up to 8 tonnes.
Special note for motorhome owners:
Some organisations place restrictions on the level of roadside assistance for motorhomes when the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeds a certain weight (which can vary from organisation to organisation). The standard of service may even vary from region to region within a state, depending upon the availability of suitable tow trucks (capable of handling large and heavy vehicles).
We recommend you contact your state based roadside assistance organisation and get specific details regarding their policies and your vehicle GVM.
From our enquiries, they all offer typical lock-out, flat tyre, no-fuel and low battery services regardless of the GVM. Towing becomes tricky when they cannot physically lift the vehicle, becoming more apparent the further you travel from main cities.
A few important points:
- Campervan & Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) membership may offer a towing service to members, call 03 9853 5555 or visit www.cmca.net.au
- Motoring 24-7 provide roadside lock-out, flat tyre, no-fuel and jump start. Towing is extra, regardless of the vehicle GVM, call 1300 303 917 or visit www.motoring24-7.com.au
- The higher priced premiums offered by organisations provide more service and assistance for high GVM vehicles. You must ask for details.
Thanks to Rita in Qld for bringing this situation to our attention.
