During our recent stay in the coast town of Tathra, NSW we headed to Memorial Gardens for great views out to sea (watching whales swim along the coastline) and then along the walking track towards the Historic Tathra Wharf. This was a tough place to build a wharf in the 1800s, but the district’s farmers desperately needed a place to export their wares. The Wharf has since been extended and still stands today looking quite aamazing.
This timber structure is the only wharf of its kind left in NSW and a very popular fishing shop. We could see birds diving in the water feeding on small fish and I guess there must have been bigger ones lurking in the water.
Below the wharf is wonderland for scuba divers and snorkellers and they can often see fur seals and/or fairy penguins from the colony on Montague Island. The large wharf attracts many visitors who enjoy the spectacle of the whale migration each year.
On Tathra Wharf you can visit the Tathra Wharf Museum operated by the Pig and Whistle Fleet Club featuring a display of historical artifacts, photos, boats, models etc. Below the museum and opening onto the wharf itself is a funky café The Wharf Locavore which has a range of really interesting food and gifts. This is a great spot to relax and enjoy coffee or lunch taking in magnificent views across Boulder Bay.
Highly recommended.
