Tathra

Tathra is a lovely town on the south coast of NSW. when heading south towards Tathra our GPS directed us to take the turn onto Carbargo-Bermagui Road and then south along Tathra-Bermagui Road - a very beautiful drive but be warned the road is narrow, bumpy, and there are 6 one lane bridges. Interesting when towing a large caravan.

During our recent visit we stayed at the BIG4 Tathra Beach Holiday Park on Andy Poole Drive and just across the road from Tathra Beach. This is a very welcoming caravan park with clean facilities. We spent several days exploring the area of this extremely popular holiday destination with a lovely beach, great fishing and many kilometres of Mountain Bike Riding tracks. 

Things we did in the area:

• Drinks and dinner at the Tathra Beach Bowling Club or TBBC (displayed on the roof)  Walking distance from the caravan park with nightly specials 
• Breakfast and coffee at Tathra Beach Tapas - a café overlooking the beach. 
• visited Tathra Beach and Bike - purchased a map of the bike tracks  which is printed on a cloth so you can carry it with you when riding.  It will not tear and doesn’t matter if it gets wet.  What a great idea
  
• walked around Tathra Memorial Gardens and saw whales off the coast.
• visited the historic Tathra Wharf - great fishing spot. Tathra Wharf Museum and a funky cafe The Wharf Locavore which has a range of really interesting food and gifts.  
• Chamberlain Lookout for more whale sightings
• Kianinny Bay boat ramp - natural harbour where they have developed a boat ramp and great parking area.  Public toilets alongside, and picnic tables in park.  
• Beach Break Takeaway for really great fish and chips. Crumbed flathead, flake, chips and absolutely delicious calamari. The calamari is prepared on site which marinated in herbs and garlic before being lightly crumbed   
• Tathra Beach Country Club further along Andy Poole Drive heading towards Burmegui. Golf course, tennis courts and playing fields plus a Chinese restaurant
• Tathra Beachside – huge caravan park with a range of cabins, safari tents (next to ensuites) retro on-site vans, permanent vans sites and camping areas.   
• Candelo markets held the first Sunday of every month. This is about half an hours drive from Tathra.  Large number of stalls selling great local produce.
• coffee at Candelo General Store - popular cafe with great coffee
• Bega Cheese Heritage Centre for lunch. Highly recommended. Some cheeses sold here are not available in supermarkets.    

During June bike enthusiasts visit the area for the 'TATHRA BEACH & BIKE ENDURO'. In 2017 races included the Bega Cheese kids races Lap-It-Up 5km, 10km and 20km participation rides. While on Sunday you could participate in the Bundadung Tuff 25km, Goat’s Knob 50km or King Nelba 75km Races. A great event.
