During our caravanning trip around Australia we spent several days in Kununurra, a town in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia. Kununurra is situated on the Ord River which is one of the great rivers in Western Australia and famous for Barramundi fishing.

We found plenty of interesting things to do:

  • tour of Lake Argyle and a boat trip back to Kununurra along the Ord River - stunning scenery,
  • visit Wyndham - five rivers lookout to see where the Ord, King, Pentecost, Durack and Forrest rivers come together in the Cambridge Gulf.
  • Parry Lagoon Nature Reserve - Marglu Billabong - visit the bird hide to see the many waterbirds that migrate to this waterhole - we even saw a crocodile
  • El Questro, and Home Valley Station on the Gibb River Road
  • Hoochery Distillery - taste the famous Ord River Rum
  • Sandalwood Factory - find out how the sandalwood is grown in this area
  • Zebra Rock - try a mango smoothie and view beautiful objects made from Zebra Rock (only found in the Kimberley region)
  • Ivanhoe Crossing - featured in the movie Australia
  • Hidden Valley Mirima National Park - known as the mini bungle bungles
  • Emma Gorge
  • Molley Springs.

While staying in Kununurra we treated ourselves to a flight with Kingfisher Tours and flew over Lake Argyle, Argyle Diamond Mine, the Bungle Bungles, Home Valley Station and El Questro, then along the Gibb River Road to view cars crossing the Pentacost River. The flight returned to Kununurra via Wyndham and along the Ord River - I would highly recommend this trip - great commentary and very interesting to see these sites form the air - a totally different perspective.

The Kununurra Visitors Centre is a great place to start your Kimberley adventure and is located in the middle of town. They will happily book tours for you and have a great range of locally made products for sale. Kununurra is very busy from May to August and I recommend that you check on bookings.

We found lots to do in Kununurra. The town has all the basic services including a Coles, IGA, tyre, mechanical & 4WD outlets.

The Hidden Valley walks are easy, close to town and we think, a must see while visiting the area. Ivanhoe Crossing is a little further out but also worth a look, as is the Zebra Rock Gallery. Fine dining can be found at the Pump House and the Kununurra Country Club (great for lunch).

A day trip to El Questro, Home Valley and Wyndham is easy and well worthwhile.

I lived in Kununurra for 9 months and loved it! It is a beautiful part of the world! We went exploring most weekends to find waterfalls and swimming spots, bush walks, aboriginal rock art, etc and we still didn't see everything the region has to offer! Would go back in a heart beat! Hands down, the best mango smoothie in town will be from the Zebra rock art gallary! The markets are nice to visit on the weekend, there is a lot of crafted people in the region.

I stayed at the Ibis for a week while passing through which was very good. The room was comfortable and the restaurant served fresh local produce on its menu. The pool was a welcome addition on a warm afternoon, but an icy cold watering hole and a fresh beer are a better way to spend an arvo.
