The Encounter Bikeway has been created on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia for visitors to enjoy a bike ride along the coast. The Bikeway is about 30 kilometres long and links Victor Harbor to Goolwa, passing through Port Elliot and Middleton. Apparently you can ride one way and catch the Cockle Train back but you will need to ring ahead (1300 655 991) and check that there is space for your bike (the train does not run every day).
We were staying at the Port Elliot Holiday Park on Horseshoe Bay and discovered that the Encounter Bikeway runs past the entrance, so we thought this would be a great way to explore the beautiful coastline in this part of the country. We will head towards Goolwa as it is relatively flat and travels past Middleton with a lovely baker for morning tea. Parts of this trail will take you along streets in the towns but never along the main road. You can pick up a map of the Encournter Bikeway form the Visitor Information Centre who can also give you information about hiring a bike.
