Monto is a town in Burnett Region of Queensland and about 300 kilometres drive from Kingaroy. The road from Murgon to Monto was very bumpy in sections and the car and caravan were being bounced around - we could not keep going after 300 kilometres so stopped at the Monto VIC to find out about the area. This is housed in a small cottage near the centre of town - unmanned but with plenty of maps and brochures. Behind the centre is a community rest area which was available for an overnight stay at $5 per night.
The caretaker came to lock up the VIC and we started chatting - we would stay but we were not carrying any water. He told us we could fill up at the tap near the dump point and we decided to try this rest area for the night. We parked next to the railway line which was very level and walked across the road to the Grand Hotel for pre-dinner drinks and a meal. Very nice evening chatting to the staff and people working in the area. A lovely friendly place.
Monto is the closest town to Cania Gorge - a beautiful National Park. We had been told about a wonderful caravan park at the Gorge - BIG4 Cania Gorge Holiday Park and we look forward to staying at this lovely looking place next time we visit Monto.
