Description

Cervantes is a town in Western Australia off Indian Ocean Drive about 198 kilometres (123 mi) north-north-west of the state capital, Perth in the Shire of Dandaragan local government area. At the 2011 census, Cervantes had a population of 467. The town was named after a ship that was wrecked nearby. The ship, in turn, was named after Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote.

Cervantes is a small town on the West Australian Coast about 200 kilometres north of Perth and the closest accommodation to the Pinnacles (Numbang National Park). Once a laidback fishing village it is now a popular holiday destination for fishing, white sandy beaches and, of course, visiting the Pinnacles themselves. Cervantes is very busy during rock lobster fishing season and the Lobster Shack sells fresh and cooked lobster, offers factory tours as well as boat trips.

We called in to look around Cervantes on our way to the Pinnacles and some of the interesting sights in and around town were:

wildflowers - even though it was late in the season there were still plenty along the sides of the road
sand dunes north of Cervantes at Lancelin - sand boarding
Pinnacles Holiday Park - a large park located on the beach
Lake Thetis - stromatalies - there are only a couple of places in WA with living stromatalies. Great boardwalk to the viewing area
Hansen Lookout - along a dirt road and walk up quite a few stairs but definitely worth the climb for magnificent view along the coast.
Pinnacles Desert Desert Discovery Centre in Nambung National Park about 20 kilometres from town. Great interactive displays.
