Carnarvon

Carnarvon is located on the coast of Western Australia about 370 kilometres south of Exmouth. We stayed for several days at the Wintersun caravan park, a Top Tourist park on the northern side of town. The Wintersun caravan park is very neat and well maintained with friendly helpful staff - highly recommended by RvTrips. 

What we did around Carnarvon:

• Takeaway from West Coast Fish and Chip Shop - really fresh and reasonably priced.  
• Blowholes - about 75 kilometres north of town but well worth the trip. It was quite windy at high tide and it was amazing to see the power of the sea forced through sea caves with the jets of water going into the air about 20 metres. I think this is a must see when visiting this area - apparently the swell has more of an effect on the blowholes than the tide.
• Point Quobba is just south of the blowholes - a calm coral filled lagoon great for snorkelling or swimming and a beautiful place for a picnic. Even though it was very windy the lagoon was protected from the rough seas. We explored the northern end of the beach - up stairs to the rocky viewing area (you can see the blow holes from here) - quite a few wildflowers growing among the rocks.
• On the way home from Point Quobba we noticed that the council had nailed wheel rims to the telegraph poles for the birds to nest. How creative and most of these had nests in them.
• One Mile Jetty. Enjoyed coffee at the Jetty Cafe where you can pay for the walk or Coffee Pot Train ride along the jetty - the money goes towards the upkeep of this old wooden structure. This Jetty stretches 1493 metres and was built in 1897. The wood is quite weathered in spots and you need to tread carefully. We saw a very large turtle a crab as big as a dinner plate swimming towards the pylons of the jetty.
• The water tower behind the jetty has be converted into a viewing platform with great 360 degree views of Carnarvon and the ocean.
• Pelican Point where we saw several kite surfers enjoying the strong winds. This is a perfect spot as you can park on the beach and launch into a waterway that had no waves.
• Visit the Fascine - foreshore at the end of the main street which has been developed into a reserve with walking tracks, shaded picnic spots, public toilets and a children's playground.
• OTC dish which was a communication satellite dish used to help USA track space shuttles.
• Carnarvon plantations are part of the Gascoyne food bowl growing a large variety of vegetables and fruit. There are several roadside stall along the road to buy local produce - bananas, tomatoes, corn etc.
• Bumbak's for homemade ice creams - banana split covered in chocolate and almond, or a mango and hazelnut ice cream covered in hazelnut chocolate - absolutely delicious.  
• There are plenty of accommodation options in town and apparently the seven caravan parks are fully booked for 2-3 months over winter.
