Brachina Gorge is a beautiful old landscape area in the Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia. The turnoff to Brachina Gorge Road is about 37 kilometres north of the Wilpena Pound Resort along Flinders Ranges Way. Brachina Gorge Road is dirt so check on road conditions before setting off. Brachina Gorge has been created through ridges of resistant quartzite. A Geological Trail has been established through this Gorge which interprets the geological history of the area. Informative signs are located at significant points throughout the gorge. Apparently this part of the Flinders Ranges has one of the best examples in the world of rock that dates between 640 and 520 million years old - amazing.
Information on the age and creation of these rocks can also be found at the Brachina Lookout at the western edge of the National Park along Brachina Gorge Road.
A brochure and map of the trail are available at information outlet like the Wilpena Pound Visitors Centre.
