Big Winch Lookout is in the centre of Coober Pedy and can been seen from most areas of town. The Big Winch itself is 8 metres high and was originally constructed in 1970s by Klaus Wirries to commemorate Coober Pedy’s opal industry. The Big Winch you see today was rebuilt shortly after the original Winch was was destroyed in 1986.
This lookout can be accessed via Italian Club Road and has great views of the barron land surrounding the town and houses tunneled into the rock from the sides of hills. There is a big parking area which seems to be able to cater for large numbers of visitors. Picnic tables are provided to sit and enjoy their view but was not that inviting.
