The Cobb & Co Changing Station is an historical building on the corner of Cordelia Street and Burrowes Street (The Carnarvon Highway) in the central part of the small town of Surat, Queensland. This building not only houses a museum dedicated to the Cobb & Co travel but also the Visitor Information Centre, Regional Art Gallery, freshwater aquarium and public library.
This was a Cobb and Co. changing station used on route through this part of Queensland and this great museum has plenty of stories about travel in the early days and history of the area. A gold coin donation is requested for a look around the museum and I believe this is well worth the money. The displays are set out beautifully with plenty of informative signs and posters as well as newspaper clippings to give you a real sense of life during the Cobb and Co era. There is a beautifully restored Cobb & Co coach in the main room, complete with luggage.
Surat is a lovely little town with plenty of space to pull over when towing the caravan. This was our rest stop during travels between St George and Roma and we highly recommend a few hours at the Cobb & Co Changing Station.
