Dubbo is a major regional city in NSW which services a large geographical area. It is a hub for transport (rail, road and air) and you will find most services and retail outlets located within this city. The Old Dubbo Gaol is located downtown and is a great historical building - I think it is open most days for a tour.
The Dubbo Visitors Information Centre is on the Newell Highway in middle of town and is very well set out with lots of merchandise for sale. Of course they can supply you with all the brochures you need to explore the area. I particularly liked the wall of locally made products with a brochure for each giving details of how and where it was made - a great way to support local artists and producers.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo is a must when you are visiting Dubbo. We took our bikes this time and rode around the animal enclosures - you can also walk, drive or hire carts. The animals are in natural settings and there are goods maps available to show you where to go - you can even spend the night at the zoo in a safari tent. There is a great gift shop at the zoo and a very busy eating area - plenty of parking (even an area set aside for caravans and motorhomes).
