When visiting Kununurra during our caravan trip around Australia we decided to take the luncheon cruise on Lake Argyle (returning by boat along the Ord River to Kununurra) with Triple J Tours. We have been recommending this tour to everyone ever since - it was relaxed, informative and a truly great day out.
We were collected from our accommodation (Lakeside Tourist Resort) and taken by coach through Durack country to Lake Argyle. First stop is the historic Durack Homestead Museum. This Museum was constructed as a replica of the original family Homestead - the old Homestead was dismantled stone by stone before the dam was flooded and re-constructed three years later as the Durack Homestead Museum.
Back on the coach for a short drive to Lake Argyle Resort and a quick look around (check out the famous infinity pool) before being taken to the Kimberley Durack (boat) for the tour of Lake Argyle. This boat stops in a small cove for lunch - a delicious smorgasbord with fresh barbecued fish (we had Thread Fin Salmon). You are invited to take a swim in the fresh cool water before lunch - the staff will assist you to get on and off the boat (apparently there are thousands of fresh water crocodiles in Lake Argyle - luckily we did not see any).
I thoroughly enjoyed the commentary from the crew about the history of the area and the Ord Irrigation Scheme, the capacity of the Dam and how it was contstructed. Hydro power is produced by water flowing through the dam wall which supplies electricity to Kununurra and Argyle Diamond Mine - very smart. Trivia questions from the crew made the return journey lots of fun - they were so happy and friendly. Everybody on board seemed to have a great time.
Back to the boat ramp and then transferred to the other side of the dam wall to board the speed boat for our trip down the Ord River , back to Kununurra. Stopped several times to look at crocodiles, other animal life and spectacular scenery created by water rushing down this river during the wet season. We moored at a secluded picnic spot on the banks of the Ord River for afternoon tea - shaded seating and toilet facilities. We also had great commentary on this trip - the skipper was passionate about the area and its history. Watching a stunning sunset over the diversion dam on Lake Kununurra was a fantastic way to end to this lovely day before boarding a bus back to the caravan park.
