Cossack is an historical village at the mouth of the Harding River, near Roebourne in West Australia. During our visit to the area (staying at Point Samson) we were informed that Cossack was a place to view the Staircase to the moon phenomena. The Staircase to the Moon is a natural phenomenon caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide, to create a beautiful optical illusion of a stairway reaching to the moon.
We drove to Reader Head Lookout at Cossack to watch the sunset and the moon rise. Unfortunately the sky was not clear enough to witness the staircase to the moon. Nonetheless there are magnificent views across Settlers Beach to Point Samson and Cape Lambert.
Access to Reader Head Lookout is via Settlers Beach Road, Cossack.
