Just a short walk north along the beach from Coral Bay will take you to a place called Skeleton Bay (northern part of Bill's Bay) which is known as the Coral Bay Reef Shark Nursery. Between September and March you can stand on the shore and watch small reef sharks swimming around in the shallow, protected waters. This water is a haven for baby reef shark, clearly seen in the water - often close to shore. They are very curious and will sometimes swim alongside you as you walk along the beach.
I was not keen to get in the water but we saw a number of people wading in the shallows holding go-pro cameras underwater to get some footage of these beautiful babies. We walked up one of the sand dunes which gave an even better view of the sharks. These are mostly black-tip reef sharks and I am told you can occasionally see a white-tip reef shark in the bay.
If you happen to be visiting Coral Bay at the right time of year make sure you head along the beach and take a look.
