During our recent visit to Melbourne we stayed at the Melbourne BIG4 Holiday Park in Coburg. This is one of the closest caravan parks to the city of Melbourne and a Tram stop is only 15 minutes walk away for public transport to the CBD (remember you will need a Myki Card which can be purchased from reception).
The caravan park is on Elizabeth Street which is only narrow but parking outside reception allows you to check in with the van or motor home well off the road. This stopping bay is just in front of the entry boom gates but don't worry because the management of the park have installed a keypad in the out lane to allow other guest's access during these times – very smart.
Melbourne BIG4 Holiday Park is very well maintained park with sealed roads and tidy gardens – they even have their own street sweeper to clean up fallen leaves or grass after mowing. Some of the caravan sites have large double cement slabs which are big enough to hold van and awning or large motor homes. Make sure you let reception know what size van you have as some of the sites are not very deep – there are also ensuite sites available of varying sizes. Our powered site had matting pegged to the ground for the van and awning.
This park has been very well designed with pathways leading to amenities meaning you don’t have to follow the road or sneak through someone else’s site.
One striking feature of the park is the camp kitchen which is in a new building behind the amenities block. One side of this building houses a large camp kitchen and the other, ensuite style bathrooms including a disabled bathroom (one of the rooms even has a bath). The camp kitchen is massive with a bench right along the back wall and wraps around the corner to accommodate a kitchen sink under the window. The bench has three (yes three) induction cook tops with stainless steel under-bench ovens beneath stainless steel canopy rangehoods. Induction cook tops require specific bases on pans and guests keep stealing these so the park may have to consider replacing these induction cooktops.
A huge island preparation bench sits in the room with microwave ovens fitted on shelves underneath, and there are a couple of commercial fridges for food storage. On the other side of this room is another long bench with bright yellow stools and power points with USB outlets to sit and work on your computer. This is a great space with plenty of light and windows all around. The room has a large air conditioning unit, dining tables and a flat screen TV mounted on the wall. This is a beautiful space. A deck sits alongside the entrance to enjoy outdoor meals during nice weather. We have never seen a better camp kitchen.
The main amenities block is in a two story building with a gym, movie room and children’s games room upstairs. Down stairs are the male and female amenities, a children’s bathroom, small camp kitchen and a large laundry.
The caravan park has a new outdoor children’s playground – fully fenced with brightly coloured equipment. Alongside reception is a large enclosed area with a resort style swimming pool, separate spa and nearby covered barbeque area with seating. There are other covered barbeque areas scattered throughout the park.
Of course the Melbourne BIG4 Holiday Park has a range of cabins available for overnight accommodation and these are all well presented. The park has two bedroom accessible cabins with ramps leading to the deck and large bathrooms to accommodate wheelchairs – very new and well equipped. We liked the design of the spa cottages which are a little older but have recently been refurbished with new bathrooms, furniture and bedding. We love the space in the bedroom and the large light bathroom with corner spa.
Not far from Melbourne BIG4 Holiday Park is a shopping centre with a Woolworths supermarket, BWS, fish and chip shop, chemist, oral care and a great eating place called Degani Cafe and Bakery. In fact we found the service and food so good, we ate at Degani's several times during our stay.
