Purnong or Purnong Landing is the location of a cable ferry across the Murray River upstream of Mannum. The town is on the cliffs above the left (eastern) bank of the river. It is 32 kilometres (20 mi) by road from Mannum on the west side of the Murray, and 40 kilometres (25 mi) on the east side.© Wikipedia

Purnong is a small community on the Murray River in South Australia and is a major irrigation area surrounded by farming lands mostly planted with onions and potatoes. Apparently onions from Purnong are exported all around the world.
Pernong also has the narrowest ferry crossing on the Murray River - the ferry runs 24 hours a day 7 days a week allowing vehicles to cross the river - we loved this service when caravanning through the state. Pernong is located in a nice little valley and as we entered town we noticed a really green cricket oval with an artificial pitch so I am guessing they love their cricket here.
Purnong has a collection of Murray riverside shacks and houses, a great spot to go water skiing and is a short drive from Mannum. Apparently you can hire a river house (commonly referred to as a shack) for a very affordable holiday on the Murray River. You will see some beautiful limestone cliffs (wonderful viewing at dusk) as you take the riverside drive to the Purnong Ferry when driving from Mannum.
