Breakaways - Moon Plain - Breakaways Conservation Park

Breakaway Reserve is north of Coober Pedy and consists of several amazing features in this dessert area of South Australia. Moon Plain is one of these unique features and consists of rocks and soft clay as far as the eye can see.  

This moonscape lies along a section of the Dog Fence or 'Dingo Fence' and is covered with cracks in the earth that seem to be endless. Apparently the Moon Plain is full of fossilised shells and the soft clay dirt makes it very difficult to walk across.  

The 70 kilometre round trip to see the Breakaways and Moon Plain is a must when visiting this area. You can venture out on your own armed with a map from the Visitor Information Centre or join a tour.
