Riverland

The Riverland Region of South Australia is well known for large vineyards, numerous orchards and the mighty Murray River. This is a Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone and I was very careful not to carry anything in the car or caravan that may affect these important industries - quarantine books are available from most Visitor Information Centres.

We followed the Murray River through the Riverland Region and visited quiet a few points of interest along the way.  Some features of our trip:

• Ferries that operate in South Australia to transport people, cars (caravans) and trucks across the river (various locations). This is a free service that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Morgan, a lovely historic town on the bend in the river.
• Waikerie, try the Waikerie Bakery for great sausage rolls and call in to Nippys for fruit juice, fresh fruit and milk products
• Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre - several walking trails, great food and wine 
• Barmera and see Lake Bonney
• Overlander Corner Hotel - historic pub with great meals
• Berri - beautiful town on the River 
• Berri Estate Winery - huge wine producer with large variety on sale at the cellar door
• Renmark - larger town with walking/cycle trails along the river, rose garden, Olivewood Historic Homestead, lovely golf course
• Angove Winery - now making wonderful Blind Tiger Gin
• Paringa - just across the bridge from Renmark - friendly pub with really good food - try schnitzel night 
• Woolshed Brewery at Wilkadene - visit by boat or car and have a locally brewed lemonade (10%) or one of the many beer varieties overlooking the Mighty Murray. 

These are just some of the highlights of our trip through the Riverland - one day I would like to return and hire a houseboat to enjoy other aspects of the Murray River like the many limestone cliffs carved out over time, and maybe even do some fishing.
