The GARMIN eTrex 30 is a hand held GPS unit used for hiking, bush walking or mountain biking. You can track where you have been, and then use your plotted course to enable a safe return to your start point.
The GARMIN eTrex 30 works very well, as the menu system is intuitive and the controls are easy to use. It attains a GPS lock (finds the satellite) relatively quickly and the colour screen is easy to read in the daylight.
We are a big fan of Garmin products, however our major criticism of the GARMIN eTrex 30 is that the base map supplied contains little detail. At one stage we walked around Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra plotting our course and the map on the device showed us walking across the lake. I am sure this would be rectified if we purchased the optional topographical maps, however these are quite expensive.
