The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre is located on the Landsborough Highway, Longreach, Queensland. This was within walking distance of our caravan park (Longreach Tourist Park), and we purchased a ticket that covered the Stockman Show, entry to the museum and lunch. We did not have time to look at the museum after the Stockman Show so were able to use our ticket the next day - very convenient.
The Centre has five major galleries: Discovery, Pioneers, Outback Properties, Life in the Outback and, of course, Stock Workers. These tell the story of the outback and also about the unsung heroes of remote Australia - Shearers, telegraph operators, pilots, teachers, fencers etc. The displays continue to be expanded as new things are donated. You will see a gallery telling the story of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and what an amazing job they do in our vast country.
The Museum is spread out and interesting but I found it a little difficult to read some information placards - some galleries are quite dark. I think this is a great place to take children so they can see how difficult life was in the outback when Australia was being developed - maybe even appreciate what they have today.
The building itself is quite unique - made from stone, timber and corrugated iron - it is stunning to look at. There are numerous car parking spaces and even room to turn when towing the caravan. They have a great shop within the building where you can buy souvenirs, books and locally crafted gifts. I think you should put the Stockman's Hall of Fame on you list when visiting Longreach
