While staying at Karumba Point Caravan Park, Queensland we decided to join a tour of the Barramundi Discovery Centre in Yappar Street, Karumba. This is the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf Strain of Barramundi. They supply areas around Queensland with fingerling to restock rivers and dams to ensure a fishing future.
The guide gave a really interesting talk about the work carried out at this facility, a tour around the grounds before we were then given the chance to feed the Barramundi who have no teeth but a sand paper like mouth. The Barramundi move very quickly to get food and are known to eat each other, so smaller fish need to be kept in a separate tank.
The Barramundi Discovery Centre has a range of souvenirs and interesting posters on the breeding cycle of these amazing fish. The farm breeds Barramundi fingerlings through each wet season ready for their release into waterways and rivers. You will need to call to check on tours during the wet season as, you can imagine, the centre is very busy at this time of year.
