While staying at Tewantin with my sister and brother-in-law we decided to head to Buderim Ginger Factory and join a tour. We started with morning tea in the Ginger Cafe - Ginger scones with ginger marmalade and cream (delicious). Next on the agenda was to look through the gift shops in the heritage-style village called Ginger Town with a range of shops selling - Australian souvenirs, hand-made porcelain dolls, motoring memorabilia, sweet treats as well as interesting gifts and cards.
We enjoyed a walk around the beautiful gardens surrounding the factory - full of different varieties of flowering ginger, exotic tropical plants and water features (you can even purchase a ginger plant to take home). If you don't feel like walking around the gardens you can take a ride on the historic cane train - Moreton.
It was then time for our tour through the factory and we learnt how the ginger is grown, harvested and processed. The ginger is held in containers for up to 12 months before processing which is done according to the orders that have been received. After the tour we went into the Ginger tasting room and sampled a number of recipes created using ginger products made here at the Buderim Ginger Factory. We were given some great ideas on how to use the product in recipes at home.
The Ginger Shop was our last stop and we all purchased loads of interesting products - ginger syrup, ginger pieces for cooking, ginger marmalade, sweet ginger sauce for stir frying and of course gingerbread men. The shop has a range of other products and gifts - I could spend hours looking at all the interesting things available for sale but the men in our group got a bit impatient.
