The Coo-ee Heritage and Visitor Information Centre at Gilgandra is a great place to stop when travelling along the Newell Highway. There are plenty of parking spaces for caravans and rigs of all sizes so we took the opportunity to stop here for lunch on our way to Coonabarabran. Shaded picnic tables are located around the Visitor Centre. The toilets are very clean and the staff were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.
Make sure you allow some time to look through this centre as you will find out about the Coo-ee march from Gilgandra to Sydney in 1915. We were lucky enough to visit the Gilgandra Visitor Information Centre when they were exhibiting a photographic display by Jeff Carter - Beach, Bush and Battlers. Fabulous photos. There are also great displays on the history of the area including Aboriginal artifacts and stories.
Just 200 metres away is the Rural Museum which has a great collection of agricultural artifacts, historical buildings and stories of yesteryear. There is a huge windmill out the front of the Rural Museum - you can't miss it. It is open everyday and there is a small fee to take a look - well worth the cost to support these important displays.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Gilgandra Visitor Information Centre and have recommended this to anyone we know who is planning to visit the area.
