The Blue Mountains is a mountainous region in New South Wales, Australia. It borders on Sydney's metropolitan area, its foothills starting about 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of the state capital. The public's understanding of the extent of the Blue Mountains is varied, as it forms only part of an extensive mountainous area associated with the Great Dividing Range. Officially the Blue Mountains is bounded by the Nepean and Hawkesbury Rivers in the east, the Coxs River and Lake Burragorang to the west and south, and the Wolgan and Colo Rivers to the north. Geologically, it is situated in the central parts of the Sydney Basin.© Wikipedia

The Blue Mountains form part of the Great Dividing Range which is located just west of Sydney. I grew up in Bathurst and have travelled over the Blue Mountains on many occasions - you need to be aware of the weather as it can be foggy and very cold in winter. The road has improved a lot over the years and it takes you through beautiful historic towns - past antique shops. It is worth stopping often in this part of NSW as the scenery is truly breathtaking - the tree sisters at Katoomba and the Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath.
The Blue Mountains have some great little cafes and restaurants, as well as fascinating art galleries and is very popular on weekends - close enough to Sydney for a day drip.
