Tamala Station - Prickly Point

Tamala Station is a working pastoral station in the southern part of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, Western Australia. They have several camping and caravan spots around the station as well as huts for accommodation. This is a great place to stay for fishing and  boating or perhaps a day trip to Steep Point, the most westerly point of the Australian Mainland.

The turn off to Tamala Station is about 85 kilometres from Denham onto Useless Loop Road, along some sealed road before 40 kilomotres of dirt to the Homestead gates. To stay at Tamala Station you will need to be self sufficient as there are minimal facilities although there are basic toilets at some sites (long drop). These are un-powered sites and pets are allowed.

We had organised a stay at Prickly Point for a couple of days. Our first stop was the Tamala Station Homestead to pay the camping fee and pick up a key to the locked gates that lead to camping areas around the property 

We were directed to the Prickly Point camping area which is located near The Hut and one of the drop toilets - very clean but a bit smelly. The gate for Prickly Point is almost directly across the road from the Homestead gate. Seven kilometres of dirt road to reach the camp and sections were corrugated but we had no trouble towing the van to our site. We settled on a spot (Beach Camp 1) and had a beach to ourselves which was absolutely beautiful - a quiet and private location. 

We took a walk along the beach and over the rocks. There were several other people staying close by but we could not see or hear them from our caravan. There were two men staying at The Hut who come to Tamala Station each year for a few months of fishing. We joined them for pre-dinner drinks and learnt about fishing in the Bay.

RvTrips highly recommend Tamala Station (and Prickly Point) as a wonderful place to stay and explore Edel Land National Park (proposed) on your way to Steep Point. The Managers at Tamala Station Homestead gave us a very detailed map of the National Park which shows where the Rangers Station is located and when to deflate tyres for the sandy and corrugated roads leading to Steep Point.
