While staying at Point Samson north of Karratha and Dampier on the West Australian Coast we took the opportunity to board a cruise departing from Hampton Harbour. This is a Resources Cruise to see huge Iron Ore and LNG Gas ships being loaded and heading out to sea around the islands of the Dampier Archipelago..
Before boarding the cruise we took the opportunity to stop at the Dampier Lookout to take in the view - it was just like a postcard with still blue waters and lots of islands.
Our Captain was Brad and he kept us entertained with plenty of information on the local area. He is not able to go closer than 500 metres to the gas plant but we did see a gas tanker leaving the harbour We also saw Rio Tinto Iron Ore ships being loaded - quite a process to make sure that the ore goes onto the ship evenly.
Brad told us the story of Sam's island which was occupied by Sam for 40 years. Parked in a beautiful bay for morning tea - scones jam and cream and some people on the cruise decided to take a dip in the clear water. We were lucky enough to see a large Manta ray swimming near the surface of the water and a grey indo-pacific dolphin.
This was a very interesting cruise.
