A member of the local Aboriginal community conducted our tour of the Ardyaloon Trochus Hatchery and Aquaculture Centre located at One Arm Point on the Dampier Peninsula. She was very interesting with great information about the sea creatures in the tanks and their importance to the local Aboriginal people. We even saw black and white angel fish which are only found in the waters off Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Trochus Shells, which can only be collected by Aboriginal people, are handpicked from the reef platforms at low tide. These are collected annually and exported to be made into mother of pearl buttons. Locally they are polished and handcrafted to provide a source of income to community members.
