BIG4 Taggerty Holiday Park is located in a bush setting on the banks of the Acheron River in north-eastern Victoria. We are at the foothills of the Cathedral Range where you can experience nature at its best. Be it fishing on the banks of local rivers, touring local towns like Marysville, Alexandra and Eildon, or just kick back relax and unwind.

Our recent adventure in Victoria took us north from Melbourne, through the Yarra Valley to Taggerty - a small community on the Maroondah Highway. On the way we drove through the Black Spur. We were a little hesitant at first (due to the name) and thought the trip into the mountains might be a little difficult towing a caravan. We had been told it would be fine and so it was. An amazing drive in fact, showcasing some spectacular scenery. One of the best drives we have undertaken in Australia - just stunning seeing a forest full of tree ferns and tall straight trees reaching towards the sky. Pure beauty.
Taggerty is much smaller than we imagined with only one shop (cafe, liquour, grocery, takeaway) and a few houses. However, the BIG4 Taggerty Holiday Park is huge. I can’t imagine what this park looks like when full as it is very covers an extensive area of land.
The caravan park is situated in a typical country setting, with a cow paddock on one side and a river on the other. In fact, this BIG4 Park boasts about one kilometre of Acheron River frontage and overlooks the beautiful Cathedral Range. We have been told that there are plenty of trout around this area and we saw a lot of people heading down to the river to try their luck. Watch out for snakes in the long grass!
There is a lovely unpowered camping ground at the far end of the park, where sites are set amongst shady trees, next to the river – very private. These sites are called 'The Rapids' and as the name would suggest, they sit alongside some beautiful rapids in the Acheron River.
We were allocated a very large site with plenty of shade. A grass site with tap and power pole located at the rear – some sites are so long, you may need an extension hose to reach your van. There are a large number of gum trees providing shade throughout the park and a variety of accommodation options from cabins on the river, camping areas in unpowered or powered spaces, ensuite sites and a number of permanent vans.
This BIG4 park is great for children with lots of space to ride bikes, a cricket pitch, jumping pillow, pedal karts, a large chess set, playground, mini golf, basketball court and tennis courts. Not to mention the very popular fully enclosed pool with plenty of shade and seating.
The owners are in the process of constructing a second amenities block at the other end of the park and hopefully this will be completed before Christmas 2017. The park has gravel roads and a boom gate for entry and exit.
The park owners Michelle Wraight and Mathew Lovell purchased the park about three years ago and are working hard to clean up the park and some of the older trees. They have also been creating extra powered sites either side of the new amenities.
There are many things to see in this beautiful part of Victoria and we could have spent several more weeks exploring the area. Some of the nearby places have a courtesy bus to take you to dinner - just ask reception.
