We called into the Castlemaine Railway Hotel on Gingell Street one afternoon for a drink – great local beer and cider. There are plenty of parking spaces across the road from the pub - next to the railway line. This place has a great reputation for really good meals but was booked out on the night of our visit.
We sat in the cosy bar area of this historic pub to enjoy our drink and look at some of the interesting pieces hanging on the walls - one such piece is a framed section of the wall itself with a signature from Eddy Charlton. Eddie Charlton was a very well known Australian professional snooker and English billiards player - I remember watching his great skills on Pot Black. Of course this signature is alongside the pool table.
There are a number of dining tables in the adjoining rooms and the menu looked very good with great choices. Outside is a beer garden, and along the front of this historic building is a covered verandah which was popular with locals.
I would highly recommend one of the local apple ciders from Harcourt - delicious.
