Parachilna is a country town in South Australia. The town was first surveyed in 1863 due to its closeness to a government water well. It is on the railway line and road between Port Augusta and Leigh Creek. Today, the Prairie Hotel, railway station, airstrip and a few buildings remain. The road east into the Flinders Ranges leads through Parachilna Gorge, recognised for its scenic beauty, to Blinman.© Wikipedia

We took a day trip through Flinders Ranges National Park from our base at Wilpena Pound Resort and stopped at Parachilna for a break. Parachilna is a small community on The Outback Highway (Barndioota Road) outside the boundary to the National Park - about 155 kilometres north of Quorn. This is a popular destination for lunch at the Prairie Hotel and many visitors call in to try one of their famous "Feral Food Platters" - a tasting plate which includes emu, camel, kangaroo etc.
The Prairie Hotel is a trendy looking pub with lovely outdoor seating and lots of large tables inside catering for groups. They sell a variety of artwork and prints which are hung around the dining rooms and they provide great accommodation out back. Manager was very friendly and we purchased a beer, soft drink (Chinotto) – very unusual taste, and some emu pate to take home.
The scenery in this part of South Australia attracts a lot of visitors each year and I understand several Australia Movies have been filmed in the area. Apparently you can sit on the verandah and watch Australia's longest coal train pass on the railway track nearby. There is a caravan park with basic amenities near the railway line.
