The town of Maitland in South Australia is located south of Moonta on the Spencer Highway as you travel down the Yorke Peninsula. In fact it is known as the "golden heart" of the Yorke Peninsula and has view of Spencer Gulf to the West. I wonder whether this name comes from the vast fields of wheat and barley grown in the surrounding countryside?
There are some beautiful old stone buildings in town and the historic walking trail will take you past many of these building as well as the National Trust Museum - grab an interpretive brochure from the Council offices at 8 Elizabeth Street (08) 8832 0000. There are some lovely parks in Maitland and the main street is lined with shade trees - most welcome during the hot weather.
