Langford Island Reef was one of the stops during our day sailing adventure on the Derwent Hunter - a Tall Ship that was built in 1946. You just walk off the beach to snorkel at this magnificent reef - rowing boats transfer you from the Derwent Hunter to the sand.
We saw a large turtle just off the shore that seemed to be floating near the coral - for a minute we thought it was ill. Apparently turtles back into the coral to sleep and this makes it very difficult for any sharks to get them.
Langford Island is only small but the reef has a large number of fish species. The long spit on this island can be inundated at high tide but is great for a swim, snorkel or picnic at low tide - we were warned to take care as the tide can rise quickly. This was a lovely peaceful spot to spend some time enjoying the Whitsundays.
