Katherine is one of the larger town towns in the Northern Territory about 320 kilometres south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. The Visitor Information Centre in Katherine is very well organised to cater for caravans and motorhomes - a large area alongside the centre is specifically set aside for caravan parking.
Katherine Visitor Information Centre is located opposite the shopping centre so we walked across the road to purchase groceries. We had been warned that this was a very busy supermarket and to expect a long wait in the checkout queue. No problem as we had coffee while waiting. This is apparently one of the busiest Woolworths supermarkets in Australia. After chatting with other people in the queue I learnt that the man behind me was Dennis McIntosh - author of Beaten by a Blow (about his experience in the shearing sheds) and The Tunnel (about his observations of working class men and their politics while working on the underground sewerage tunnels in Melbourne). A very interesting man who was heading to a small community near Katherine to teach.

Katherine is a very busy town which has a range of services for travellers and some great art galleries. We drove through Katherine a couple of times while travelling in the Northern Territory - once heading up to Kakadu and again before heading to Kununurra in Western Australia.
