We left Lakes Entrance (Victoria) at about 10 am and stopped at Orbost for morning tea (best sausage rolls) before arriving at Merimbula on the south coast of NSW. We had booked ahead to stay at BIG4 Merimbula Tween Waters Holiday Park on Dunns Lane, located between Top Lake and the Ocean. What a great location – just a short walk to Main Surf Beach or across the bridge to the main shopping centre.
We were able to walk around and pick a site as they are not too busy and we chose one in the top section of the park with concrete strips for the caravan and a large cement slab for awning that went all the way to the road. This means that you don’t have to walk on the mud after heavy rain.
We were close to the amenities which are very clean (need key), but ther is one female toilet and one male toilet at the end of the block and facing the reception for use of guests in a hurry. These are also useful when the main amenities were being cleaned (no key required). The family bathroom, laundry and enclosed clothes line are found at the other end of the amenities block.
As mentioned earlier the Caravan Park sits on two levels with a number of ensuite sites on the lower level. Several different types of cabins with some family cabins facing the pool – parking is found behind these cabins with a deck area out front for access to the pools. This BIG4 has three different pools, a water splash park and jumping pillow provided in one large area.
There are two covered barbeques within the splash park fence which I think is very convenient for families during summer - the kids can play while you are preparing dinner. Behind reception is a large games room and camp kitchen with pull down plastic blinds to keep out the cold weather during winter. These can be opened during summer for lovely air flow. Lots of tables and even some tables in outside area under a shade sail.
Shelley at reception was bubbly and full of information on walks, cafes, clubs etc. This is the home of the Merimbula Classic – a long board, SUP meeting once a year that has attracted hundreds of people to this area over its long history. This BIG4 is close to the action with only a short walk to the open parkland beside the beach that houses all the gear and displays of new equipment.
We found this a great spot to base ourselves to explore the part of the coast. Highly recommended.
