The first stop as you head into Wilpena Pound is the beautiful building that houses the reception area, cafe and general store of the resort - fuel can also be purchased from this location. The car parking area is vast with ample space for cars and buses. We were towing our caravan and asked for a site on which we could stay hooked up as we were not sure how long we would be staying at Wilpena Pound. You can pay your park fee and site fee at reception before driving to the campground.
The Wilpena Campground has about 50 acres of powered or unpowered caravan and camping sites. This is all set in natural bushland and close to the start of the walking trails to view Wilpena Pound, Hills Homestead and various other locations within the Flinders Ranges National Park.
We were allocated a large site with privacy provided by a small native garden between our neighbours and us. This was a large site with plenty of room to leave the car hooked onto the caravan - these are gravel site but not dusty. Amenities are old but very clean with flushing toilets and hot showers. The track to the facilities is not lit up at night so make sure you have a torch with you. Native animals come in search of food morning and evening - a beautiful sight.
In addition to the campground, the Wilpena Pound Resort also has motel rooms and luxurious Safari tents, lovely restaurant and pool for the use of guests. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and ended up staying in this beautiful spot for several nights - very relaxing.
