When we decided to visit Carnarvon Gorge in Queensland we stayed at Takarakka Bush Resort. This is a large caravan and camping ground in a lovely bush setting along Carnarvon creek. It is very busy and I recommend that you book ahead if you want to be part of one of their Roast dinners.
The camp is divided into sections:
There are several large amenities blocks which are very clean and spacious. Also a number of camping kitchens with plenty of tables, hot water, sinks, barbeques etc.
Takarakka has happy hour each afternoon from 4 – 5 with free nibbles (be careful of the Kookaburras as they will dive bomb tables to get the cheese). Great way to meet new people. Movie nights are held on the deck and you are given a schedule upon checking to show what movies are playing.
5 pm each day has an information session on walking the gorge – very interesting. Walking tours of the gorge with informative guides are available most days. Scenic flights are also on offer – I think this would be great to get a feel for the size of the gorge as it is hard to tell when walking along the bottom.
The reception area contains a general store selling basis supplies, beer, wine and souvenirs. Carnarvon Creek has resident platypus which can be spotted early morning or late afternoon - quite amazing.
RvTrips highly recommend Takarakka Bush Resort and would not hesitate to return for a restful few days.
