Yarrawonga (Victoria) and Mulwala (NSW) are towns that sit on either side of Lake Mulwala which was created on the Murray River by a weir built in the 1930s. This is a huge lake system where you can still see the remains of trees left when the area was flooded. Locals tell me these trees were thick in the early days and you could hardly see the land on the other side. Slowly the trees are rotting away and the lake is becoming more open. Lake Mulwala is very popular for water sports and fishing - the annual Cod Classic was held the weekend before we arrived and the BIG4 was completely booked.
BIG4 Yarrawonga-Mulwala Lakeside Holiday Park is part of the Woolman Holiday Parks group, and this beautifully presented caravan park is run by Jo, Russell, Deb, Phil and their hard working team. We were lucky enough to be able to stay for three nights (not nearly enough time) and the park was always immaculate - toilets clean, grass mown, hedges trimmed and pool sparkling.
The main amenities block at the Lakeside
BIG4 is very neat and tidy and has had one of the best renovations I have ever seen. This was a
large brick building which has been clad
in corrugated iron and timber and completely refurbished inside – new toilets,
showers, hand basin with timber, corrugated iron features and new tiling. Just beautiful
– spacious and very clean with music playing softly all day.
In the centre of the amenities is a laundry with long
benches plus a children's bathroom with a lovely mural of animated characters
on the wall. You will need to collect a
key from reception for this bathroom as well as the camp kitchen which is
housed in another lovely building on the other side of the pool area.
The pool area is also very well presented with a
large shallow pool containing mushroom fountains for the little ones, and a separate heated pool within
the enclosure for the older ones. Outside the pool area is a games room, cinema room, coffee machine and camp kitchen – each connected by a
large veranda where you can sit and watch pool activities.
Lovely grassed and shaded areas surround the pool and games room with plenty of picnic tables and a sheltered
barbeque. Across the internal road and still
located near the centre area of the park is a tennis court and fully enclosed
jumping pillow with shade sales.
We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff who seem to enjoy working at the park and were all happy to impart local knowledge regarding things to see and do in the area. This is a beautiful part of the country and you could easily spend a couple of weeks exploring the many wineries, breweries, olive groves and food outlets scattered along the mighty Murray.
Mulwala has one of the best Bakeries we have seen with a large seating area which even has a TV and lounge - plus a children's book shelf to keep the little ones entertained. They serve lovely lunches at very reasonable prices - yummy.
I would not hesitate to recommend Yarrawonga-Mulwala BIG4 Holiday Park which is conveniently located across the road from Lake Mulwala and a public access boat ramp.
